I hand-printed ‘Chinamitl’ with a linoleum block. The artwork depicts an eagle flying over a chinampa (a floating garden). Below that, an axolotl is shown dancing underwater. Chinamitl is the Nahuatl word for chinampa: floating garden islands made on shallow lakebeds by the indigenous people of Mesoamerica. You can still see chinampas in Xochimilco to this today with a growing crowd of young chinampero farmers that are learning how to use their ancestral knowledge to save this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
